What is UPC (Unique porting Code) for MNP Process?
Mobile Number Portability has commenced on January, 20, 2010 all across India and first and foremost to get the benefit from the Mobile Number Portability (MNP) you need to first get the UPC (Unique porting Code). So, let’s check out some important facts on this unique porting code like what does an 8 digit UPC code means and also what will be the validity of this UPC with which you can port your number to the operator of your choice irrespective of CDMA or GSM. Before that if you don’t know how to get the UPC, then you just need to send one simple sms, PORT(your mobile number) to 1900. After sending the sms, you will get the UPC from 1901.
UPC, which is a short form of Unique Porting Code basically consists of 8 characters of which the first two characters specifies the Service provider’s name and Service Area code. Like if the first two characters of UPC is BZ then it specifies a BSNL (B), Maharashtra (Z) number and the remaining 6 characters shall contain 1 to 9, A-N & P-Z only and small letters and the alphabet ‘O’ will never be allowed in the UPC.

Please note that the UPC which is allocated to the customer will be valid for a period of 15 days from the date of request for all services areas except Jammu & Kashmir, Assam and North East licensed areas where the validity for the Unique Porting Code allocated to a subscriber shall be valid for a period of 30 days from the date of request, the sms which is to be sent for requesting the UPC by the subscriber shall be the word ‘PORT’ followed by a space followed by the ten digit mobile number which is to be ported which shall be case insensitive. (i.e. it can be port or Port etc.) and in case the Subscriber’s Caller Line Identification does not match with the ten digit mobile number, Unique Porting Code shall not be allotted but a message shall be generated to inform such subscriber that the Caller Line Identification (CLI)does not match with the mobile number.
